Since 2020, Nell has been the star of Guide Dogs brand TV advert raising awareness of our Children's and Young People's services. For the supporting digital campaigns in 2022, we wanted to celebrate Nell’s journey so far as a shining example of the difference support from Guide Dogs can make to a child with sight loss. This was centred around our film 'One Second Every Day | Making memories with Nell, a six year old with sight loss'.
Nell was born with glaucoma, losing her sight completely
in one eye and having little vision in the other. Nell was just one and a half
when she met Branwen for the first time, a habilitation specialist from Guide
Dogs. Since that day, we’ve been there to support Nell every step of the way.
From teaching cane skills and everyday life skills at home, to supporting Nell
and her teachers when she started school. We also provided Nell with an iPad
which supports her development through play and independent learning at home.
In this video we look back at Nell’s incredible journey from her early
childhood playing on the beach, right through to present day rollerblading with
her sister. Now six years old, Nell is thriving. She’s confident, determined
and full of dreams for the future.
Over the years we’ve developed a wide range of services with and without dogs to support people living with a vision impairment. Children and adults. Friends and family. Whoever you are, our expert staff, dedicated volunteers and life-changing dogs are here to help you live actively, independently, and well.
We’re a charity, almost entirely funded by donations, and we are the world’s largest assistance dog organisation. As world leaders in puppy socialisation and dog training, we’re the only organisation to breed and train guide dogs in the UK. We’re also the largest employer of specialists dedicated to helping children and young people overcome the challenges of sight loss.
