The North Shields Heritology Project
Victor Noble Rainbird- Broken Dreams

Film & Campaign Description

Victor Noble Rainbird was a North Shields Artist born in the late 19th Century, and it is a tale of Triumph and ultimately Tragedy. Year 5 pupils from a local Middle School were tasked with researching Victor’s story and producing this short 3 part documentary of his life. Working in groups with a local Writer, the children produced a Storyboard for the film, and created much of the dialogue for the script. A local Digital Filmmaker came into school, and the children were given advice on what a good documentary looks like, and also got hands on with all of the equipment used in creating the film. Apart from final editing, the majority of the footage was filmed by the children themselves. First World War One expert Dr Dan Jackson and Art Historian Dave Young were invited to the school to be interviewed by the children who worked in teams to create the questions for the interviews. Learning and Skills outcomes included, Creative Writing, Storyboarding and Script preparation, Questioning Techniques, Art appreciation, Increased Self Confidence in facing the camera, Public Speaking and the effective use of Digital Filming Equipment. The film was premiered at a special school assembly with parents in attendance.

The North Shields Heritology Project

We aim to bring heritage to life for local school children, using Technologies such as Virtual Reality, Digital Filmmaking and Immersive Sound to fire their imagination. Working with schools across North Tyneside, we introduce children to local heritage stories. They then get the opportunity to work alongside local experts in the digital world, to create their own content based on these stories. So, as well as keeping heritage alive, we also open their eyes to the possibility of future careers in the digital field - a burgeoning industry in the North East, where girls in particular are seriously under represented in the workforce.
