Sheffield Mencap and Gateway
Supporting learning disability patients: easy changes

Film & Campaign Description

People with learning disabilities experience profound health inequalities. The Learning Disabilities Mortality Review (LeDeR) found people with learning disabilities have a median age of death of 63 compared to 84 in the general population, with 42% of people with a learning disability’s death deemed avoidable compared to 22% in the general population. People with a learning disability’s health needs are not being met and opportunities for preventive support are being missed.

We work to reduce these inequalities through partnering with health providers across Sheffield to develop their understanding of people with learning disabilities. We support health services to adapt care pathways and clinical practice to meet the needs of the learning disability community. This video is part of a series we developed to support this work.

We developed the video collaboratively with the learning disability community, and in partnership with the local NHS Integrated Care Board. We understand the pressures of time and resources faced by NHS staff, so designed this video to be succinct and focus on the easily actionable steps that can make a big difference. Our goal is for the video to be shared widely amongst health professionals, outside our usual reach within Sheffield, in order to support improvements to practice nationally.
