Trade Aid
Mikindani - A Trade Aid film for Mikindani Museum

Film & Campaign Description

Visit the Mikindani Museum Website

Mikindani lies on the shores of a lagoon north of Mtwara in Southern Tanzania. In this new film made for Mikindani Museum we look at life in the town through the eyes of its people.

The film celebrates the Makonde culture of this coastal region. We meet the people living here today. They tell us of their traditions and crafts, along with the often treacherous nature of their work at sea.

The film supports the oral history activities of Mikindani Museum, Makumbusho ya Mikindani. (‘Makumbusho’ is the Swahili word for a place of memories) The film is presented and narrated by Somoe Robert, the museum’s Manager.

Entry to the museum will always be free, so the film will be distributed to encourage donations — from funding bodies in the UK as well as from individuals — for the continuing development of the displays and activities.

KARIBU! – WELCOME!

Somoe Robert narrated and produced the documentary along with Director Freya Williams of Approach Films and the help of others. It was created as a voluntary effort by all for the Mikindani Museum and town of Mikindani.

Trade Aid

TradeAidUK.org has worked for 25 years to improve the lives of people in the small Tanzanian town of Mikindani.

Youngsters are offered six-months placements in The Old Boma Hotel, which was established as training hotel by Trade Aid. Of the hundreds who have gained professional skills, most then find worthwhile employment that would otherwise have been uncertain.

The town’s museum, now in its seventh year, extends Trade Aid’s efforts into the wider Southern Tanzania region. School and college students visit us in their thousands to learn about their eventful history and to take pride in the rich heritage their peoples share.

This is a vital cultural resource and entry will always be free.

New funding is sought to carry forward the plans the museum's Tanzanian staff have for further development.
