Meet Oscar and Ella - two thriving and talkative four year olds. Both were born profoundly deaf but learned to listen and talk at The Elizabeth Foundation. Based in Portsmouth, the charity is the UK's leading provider of preschool education services for babies and young children with all degrees of deafness.
Ella's mum: "She loves coming here. She's just completely absorbed by anything and everything ... She's happy, she's got friends, she's thriving." Oscar's mum: "He said to me the other day, I love being deaf and I have deaf friends. And that's how he sees it, and that's amazing."
This film was produced as part of our charity's general awareness campaign with the aims of publicising our services to parents of deaf children, promoting the work we do to donors and potential supporters, and raising general awareness about deafness. The film was created totally in-house by Howard Hurd, our Digital Media Manager (with the assistance of four year old Oscar as GoPro camera operator!).
Our previous film (Daisy's story) won a Bronze Judges' Award and a Silver People's Choice Award in the Smiley Charity Film Awards 2024.
The Elizabeth Foundation helps preschool deaf children learn to listen through their hearing technologies and to talk clearly and confidently.
Established in 1981, the charity has grown to become the UK's largest single provider of education services for babies and preschool children with all degrees of deafness.
Through its wide range of services for deaf children from birth to five years, The Elizabeth Foundation offers these children the best possible start in life. It provides Ofsted 'Outstanding' nursery services at its Family Centre in Hampshire. The charity also offers home learning and support for families and professionals all across the UK through its innovative Let's Listen and Talk online programme.
