Developmental Disability WA

DDWA commits to empowering people with developmental and intellectual disability and neurodiversity and advocates for their rights. The organisation provides support for people with disability, their families, carers, and supporters, while advocating for their rights through systemic advocacy with organisations, government bodies, and disability professionals.

This year's Smiley Charity Film Awards entry is a part of DDWA's focus on communication rights.

DDWA works to improve information, resources and advice for people with developmental disability who have communication disability (complex communication support needs), and for their families and supporters.

People with communication disability can be helped through a range of different print and symbol based materials, and on our website you will find a range of different resources in different formats, especially on Communication Focus Area and Communication Disability, Access and Inclusion web pages.

DDWA puts a focus on person-centred communication, communication partners and in organisational Disability Access and Inclusion Plans (DAIPs). A good DAIP will make sure that all people with disability have the same rights as people without disability to access services from Local and State Governments.

Why is this important? Because communication is a fundamental human right.
