Larsen’s Pride created this film in partnership with the incredible team at The Christie Proton Beam Centre in Manchester. The purpose of the film is to familiarise the youngest children with proton beam therapy before they begin treatment. There are two proton centres in the UK and many paediatric brain tumour cancer patients are now sent for this modern radiotherapy treatment.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child demands that children a given the information that they need, appropriate for their development, in any decisions made on their behalf. The convention demands that children are centred in their care, whatever that may be, with their voices and opinions taken into account. The convention argues that all children have the right to education and to play. So often, these rights are lost when a child is diagnosed and treated for cancer.
Larsen’s Pride exists to fight for these rights and to bring courage and comfort to all children diagnosed with a brain tumour and many more who are diagnosed with other forms of cancer.
Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children. Until there is a cure, our charity will continue to support children, families and oncology professionals to centre children in their care, to ensure they have an appropriate understanding and a voice that is heard, and most importantly, access to a childhood that all children deserve.
This short film helps us to reach these goals. Supporting more children to access very un-child-friendly treatments with courage and comfort.
Thank you for watching - we would so appreciate your vote to help spread our work further.
Larsen’s Pride was established in memory of 5 year old Larsen, who died from a brain tumour in 2019. The charity’s fundamental aim is to bring courage and comfort to children under the age of 12 with a brain tumour diagnosis, although much of our work supports the wider paediatric cancer community. Our ambitions are to bring courage and comfort to children right now. And to do this, we create and develop resources such as this film, to help familiarise them with the treatments they will go through. There is no ‘calpol’ version of cancer treat, no child friendly treatment, but our resources aim to centre the child in their journey, give them the information they need and deserve and an understanding appropriate for their age and development.
This film was made in partnership with the wonderful staff at The Christie Proton Beam Centre in Manchester, as a way of introducing and familiarising children with proton beam treatment, what it is and what to expect.
Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children. Until there is a cure, Larsen’s Pride will fight for children to have the best, most child friendly, experience of treatment possible and with the most amount of time for childhood on the side.
