Child Bereavement UK's animated short film 'What is grief?' was made in response to questions that many grieving people ask our Helpline: Is that way that I’m feeling normal? Will it always feel this bad? Will I ever be happy again? It is designed to help anyone of any age or background who is grieving by explaining some of the difficult but normal emotions you can feel, acknowledging the challenges you might experience, and suggesting some things that can help. The script was written by Child Bereavement UK's Communications Team with advice from the charity's Bereavement Support Team. The content was based on the experiences of bereaved families the charity supports, the concerns they have shared with us, and what they have told us helps them in their grief. Our aim was to make the film as diverse and inclusive as possible, representing a range of people of different ages, backgrounds and bereavement experiences. It is branded with the charity’s look and feel and tone of voice, ending with a call to action to contact the charity’s Helpline for someone to talk to and further support. 'What is grief?' was launched to coincide with Father's Day, a particularly difficult day for many bereaved families. The film was produced on a low budget and kindly funded by Co-op Funeralcare, which enabled it to be rolled out to its funeral homes and staff across the UK and in regional press, thereby amplifying its reach.

Child Bereavement UK helps families to rebuild their lives when a child grieves or when a child dies. We support children and young people (up to the age of 25) when someone important to them has died or is not expected to live, and parents and the wider family when a baby or child of any age dies or is dying. We provide training to professionals in health and social care, education, and the voluntary and corporate sectors, equipping them to provide the best possible care to bereaved families.
