Migrant Help
Unfair Jobs Fair

Film & Campaign Description

Modern slavery is a huge, systemic issue in the UK, but there is a general misconception that it is confined to other countries. While it is estimated that more than 100,000 people live in slavery in the UK, it remains a crime hidden in plain sight.

Migrant Help, along with the PR agency 23Red, decided to shine a light on the issue by creating the Unfair Jobs Fair campaign, an exhibition stunt to reveal the harsh and insidious reality of modern slavery.

This innovative campaign exposed the reality of modern slavery in the UK by appearing at a popular careers fair, London Jobs Fair, under the guise of a pretend recruitment company, LockedIn Recruitment. We showcased job roles that looked, at first glance, entirely legitimate. But, in reality, the roles mirrored the tactics used by traffickers and reflected the real stories of modern slavery survivors supported by Migrant Help.

Jobseekers visited the stand, which was given a look and feel true to being a recruitment company, and engaged with what they believed were promising roles. These included a live-in nanny with no breaks, a seafarer forced to work 21 hours a day, and a waiter who endured physical discipline. Spanning a range of industries, including hospitality, construction and agriculture, the stunt shone a light on how pervasive modern slavery is.

Hidden cameras captured attendees' genuine shock, horror, and disgust as they realised the disturbing reality of these ‘opportunities’, as seen in this film which seeks to raise awareness of the pervasive nature of modern slavery in our society.

Migrant Help

Migrant Help rebuilds lives stolen by displacement, trafficking and modern slavery. We support those most in need and least likely to find support elsewhere, whilst aiming to bridge community gaps and bring services and support together.

We provide specialist support, safe accommodation and support plans, as well as facilitate access to key services. We inform governments and policy makers to ensure fair and consistent processes are in place to assist survivors of displacement and exploitation in the UK. We promote the social values of equality, diversity, inclusiveness and empathy, enabling our clients to become part of their local communities.

Migrant Help's vision is for a global society that protects survivors of exploitation and displacement, treats them with respect and enables them to thrive as individuals.
