In May 2025, NHS health bosses made a devastating decision to cut £1.4 million in critical funding from Mountbatten Isle of Wight – the Island’s only provider of hospice care – including an immediate cut of £527,000 from autumn 2025, with no prior warning.
Without action, our Island hospice faced an almost 40% funding reduction by 2026/27, putting essential end-of-life care services at serious risk.
Our film, 'The Letter', urged the local community to write to the NHS Integrated Care Board (ICB), MPs, and Healthwatch to oppose the cuts and stand up for hospice care on the Isle of Wight.
The overwhelming public response, sparked by the film, successfully led to a reversal of the immediate cuts, though negotiations for long-term sustainable funding into 2026/27 continue.
Mountbatten Isle of Wight and Mountbatten Hampshire are separate charities working in partnership to provide 24/7 inpatient and community domiciliary and palliative end-of-life care services to people across the Isle of Wight, Southampton City, and large parts of Hampshire, including rehabilitation and enablement services and psychological and bereavement support to patients and their families.
Treating everyone with kindness and compassion and providing a safe and caring environment is at the heart of everything we do to support those living with a life-limiting illness and their loved ones.
We deliver 24/7 expert care and support to people experiencing death, dying, and bereavement, in their homes and our hospice buildings in Newport, Isle of Wight, and West End, Southampton. We give patients and their families choices about their care, providing the highest quality nursing, medical, and therapeutic care, and supporting their physical, social, and psychological needs.
We serve a population of approximately 790,000, supporting around 4,000 people every day across the areas we serve in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
Our services are free of charge to all who need us, thanks to the generosity of our amazing communities and our incredible volunteers who give their time to support the best possible care for local people living the last years of their lives.
