Every 90 minutes – the length of a football match – at least five people in the UK suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. This equates to more than 30,000 a year. Tragically, less than one in ten people survive, often because those around them don’t have the confidence to perform CPR or use a defibrillator.
Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer, suffered a cardiac arrest during a Premier League match, aged just 29-year-old at the time. Bystanders and club medics rushing to perform CPR and provide early defibrillation, saving his life.
Tom joined British Heart Foundations campaign in Heart Month, February 2024 to urge the nation to learn CPR through our free digital tool RevivR.
Heart attacks that strike without warning, strokes that shatter futures, newborn babies with broken hearts. These are just some of the cruelties of heart and circulatory diseases, and the brutal reality is there is so much more for science to discover before we can beat the world’s biggest killers.
That’s why the British Heart Foundation exists. Funding research is how we change the game. When we join forces, we make the impossible possible. We take the best and brightest ideas from scientists’ minds and make theories on pages transform into lifesaving breakthroughs such as 3D printed models of hearts that can help guide surgeons to perform complex surgeries, and AI technology that has the power to predict heart attacks.
Research can save your life and your family’s lives. But without you it all stops tomorrow.
Medical breakthroughs don’t just happen. Driven by love, your donations, and the awe-inspiring science we fund, we make science fiction a reality, together.
We align with the following UN Sustainable Development Goals:
