The Challenge: Life for a Child needed a campaign to mark 25 years of providing life-saving diabetes care to young people in under-resourced countries. The brief was to celebrate their impact supporting more than 60,000 children across 53 countries, while emphasising the urgent work still ahead to reach 100,000 children by 2030.
The Approach: Building on the concept of a "connecting thread," we created an animated film that brings this metaphor to life. The film opens on a sleeping child, his simple blanket offering fragile protection as dark shadows creep through the windows, a visual representation of the ever-present threat of untreated diabetes.
As we zoom into the blanket, it transforms into a living tapestry. Through animation, we weave together the threads of Life for a child's 25-year journey: countries served, children supported, clinics established, and lives saved. The blanket evolves from plain cloth into a vibrant patchwork quilt, rich with numbers, cultural patterns, and children's faces, illustrating the global network of care the charity has built.
The film concludes as we zoom back out: the completed quilt now protects the child as sunrise breaks and he sits up to face a new day, the gift of life itself.
The Impact: The quilt visual and "connecting thread" metaphor has been adopted as the cornerstone of Life for a Child's 25th anniversary campaign, deployed extensively across their website, promotional materials, and fundraising communications providing a powerful, cohesive visual language for their life-saving mission.
We believe: No child should die of diabetes.
It’s a clear vision but the challenges faced by young people living with type 1 diabetes are anything but simple. And this is especially true in under-resourced countries where access to care is limited and the physical, emotional, and financial burdens of the condition can be crushing.
We provide essential supplies, including insulin, syringes, and blood glucose monitoring equipment. We produce accessible education materials for children, families and healthcare workers and help to develop the skills of local medical professionals. And we undertake research, which helps us – and others – to advocate for positive change.
