This film was made to capture the unique and many benefits group music making brings to people in the Gorbals in Glasgow. Comprising of short interviews with participants, staff, partners and community members, we wanted to give folk the chance to share their experiences and celebrate themselves as musical people.
At a time when the arts and creativity are being underfunded and under appreciated we want to remind ourselves and others how powerful creative expression is to manage our health, connect us to others and bring about positive social change. That in a world that feels overwhelmingly negative and polarised, it is a radical act to create these music moments of joy and celebration together. We believe that the more we share the skills of music with others, the more people can create these pockets of beauty in their own lives. We hope this film will inspire those who watch it to support our work, join our community and/or explore opportunities to be creative in their own lives.
Givin’ it Laldie is a grassroots, community music charity based in the Gorbals, Glasgow. We bring people in the Gorbals from diverse backgrounds together through group musicmaking to:
█ Build understanding, community and connections between people.
█ Improve people’s health and wellbeing.
█ Use creative participation to enhance the cultural life of the Gorbals.
Each year we bring on average 250 people from diverse backgrounds in the Gorbals together through 300 group music sessions to improve health and wellbeing and grow a sense of community and belonging. All the sessions are free, held in accessible venues and we provide all the equipment needed to take part. Our experienced music facilitators design the sessions to be inclusive of all confidence levels and abilities, make sure to pace each session so that no one is left behind and ask for regular feedback to ensure each session is accessible.
We also help organise, perform at and support 10 - 15 events a year where our participants volunteer their time, energy and improving music skills to perform and bring joy to others. Through this we reach out to on average another 1,000 audience members to create a sense of community, joy and pride.
