REVISITING A POWERFUL LEGACY: BRIAN & WILL KILGANNON

This in-house film retells one of the most meaningful stories in Prostate Cancer UK’s history, the story of Millwall supporter Brian Kilgannon, and now, his son Will.

The Original Story

When Millwall FC partnered with Prostate Cancer UK, they famously turned down a lucrative payday loan sponsorship to back a cause that truly mattered to their club and community.

Through that partnership we met Brian Kilgannon.

Brian had been diagnosed with prostate cancer too late, and he became determined to make sure other men didn’t face the same fate. In 2011, he stood alone in an empty Den, reading a heartfelt letter to men everywhere.
The resulting film was raw, honest and unforgettable. It reached national audiences, won awards and, most importantly, inspired men to get checked. It genuinely changed behaviour and helped save lives.

Brian’s son Will grew up fundraising for the charity alongside his dad. After Brian passed away when Will was just 12, he continued honouring his father’s message.
As Will says: “My dad was my idol. Not a moment goes by when I don’t think about him. I miss him every day.”

Why We Revisited the Story

At our Comms Away Day last summer, the idea emerged to retell Brian’s story through Will’s voice. We wanted to pay tribute to the impact of the 2011 film while creating something new, emotionally resonant and relevant for today’s audiences.

With no access to the original footage, the team had to reimagine the look and feel from the ground up, finding creative ways to echo the spirit of the original film while building a story only Will could tell.

In the 2011 version, Brian stood alone in an empty stadium. In the new film, Will stands in a stadium that feels alive, symbolising progress, momentum and the ongoing fight to save men’s lives.

Collaboration & Production

The film was made in close partnership with Millwall FC, with support on set from Lukas Jensen, Paul Robinson and the wider club.

Filming took place on the same day as Prostate United, with the Lions squad out raising money and awareness, bringing genuine energy, movement and authenticity to the project.

A small group of actors, carefully designed sound and strategic staging helped transform an empty stadium into one that feels full.

The schedule was tight, with Will juggling press interviews and filming throughout the day, but thanks to strong planning and teamwork, everything came together seamlessly.
Despite the long hours, Will was extraordinary from start to finish.

Launch & Impact

The film launched this week and has already secured coverage across Sky Sports, ITV, Yahoo, the EFL and more.
Engagement has been strong, but the emotional reaction has meant even more.

Brian’s wife, and Will’s mum, Loretta shared:
“Everyone involved should be so proud of your continuing achievements in helping men. The video is a priceless gift to all who watch it. Thank you!”

Prostate Cancer UK

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. 1 in 8 men will get it, and if you’re over 50, Black or your dad or brother had it, you’re at a higher risk. That’s thousands of dads, grandads, partners and friends diagnosed every year.

We’re giving men the power to navigate this disease by:

  • - Informing men of their risk of prostate cancer, and what they can do about it.
  • - Investing millions to find better treatments and better tests that spot fast-growing cancers early, when it’s easier to treat.
  • - Campaigning for an early detection programme that invites men for regular, accurate tests for the disease.
  • - Providing accurate, expert support services to men and their families.

But we can’t take it on alone. We need more of us to stand together to make a world where no man dies of prostate cancer.
