Women + Health
Does That Make Me A Woman?

Film & Campaign Description

Following her lead role in Molly Manning Walker’s How to Have Sex, Mia McKenna-Bruce explores the stark polarities of women's experience through poetry for Does That Make Me A Woman? Performing words by London-based writer and director Bec Evans, the short film unravels the contradictions of modern womanhood – posing raw questions about what women are expected to embody, and the clash of strength and vulnerability that rises from these pressures.

“Expressing vulnerability, the contradictions in, and confusion around certain issues women come up against does not mean not standing for anything. It means owning all the contradictions and flaws inherent in any person – man, woman and everyone in between.”

Presented through daubed colours and iridescent textures, Evans captures the harshness of feminine expectations, and the lasting imprint of outdated gender roles and stereotypes. Working with a crew made up of predominantly women, the piece was developed as part of a 360 degree campaign, partnering with charity organization Women & Health – whose work helps isolated and vulnerable women overcome multiple health challenges. Navigating gender and sexuality, consent and identity, Does That Make Me A Woman? initiates a nuanced conversation around the complexities of being a woman in today’s landscape, reflecting on the power found in our flaws and idiosyncrasies.
