Extreme poverty is on the rise for the first time in two decades, violent conflict is currently at a 30-year high, and we are facing a global climate emergency — a crisis that is most felt by the communities that have least contributed to it. That’s why we’re teaming up with Village Enterprise to prove there is a better way to support refugees and others facing extreme poverty through the DREAMS (Delivering Resilient Enterprises and Market Systems) programme.
DREAMS is a scalable new model of refugee assistance that helps the poorest refugees launch thriving businesses, connect to local markets and access depression treatment. Most humanitarian funding includes food rations and cash assistance. Instead, DREAMS offers holistic support so that refugees can create viable pathways into sustainable livelihoods. Since 2018, DREAMS has transformed 272,000 lives in Uganda and Ethiopia, we now seek to expand across five African countries, reducing humanitarian need and creating a more impactful, cost-effective and dignified humanitarian system for up to 2 million people.
At Mercy Corps, we seek solutions to the world’s toughest challenges. To take on the consequences of conflict and climate change, we bring together bold ideas and the lived experience of people who know their communities best—scaling what works to achieve lasting, transformational change.
We connect people across the globe to clean water, nutritious food, better economic opportunities, and more peaceful tomorrows—all critical to unlocking the power of human potential and strengthening communities to better cope during crises, adapt to evolving challenges, and thrive into the future.
