Barts Charity
Bernard's Story: In Memory of Janet

Film & Campaign Description

When Bernard’s wife Janet was diagnosed with blood cancer, his world was turned upside down. Janet sadly passed away in June 2023. Bernard shared his and Janet's emotional life story with us following the creation of a Tribute space for her.

The Tribute space is not only a great comfort to him, her friends and family but it has since raised over £10,000 which Bernard hopes will help us in our mission to support ground-breaking research and transformational healthcare in our East London community:

“The more money we’re able to raise, the more hours of research can be done. Those hours could be what tips that research over the edge, in finding a cure and extending people’s lives. All of the staff moved mountains with Jan. They gave me so much, and I can’t thank them enough”, shares Bernard.

We created this film with the unwavering support of Bernard as part of our In Memory Storytelling campaign which highlights the power of celebrating the life of a loved one through dedicating a Tribute space to them.

The campaign has helped us reach more people who may like to remember a loved one in this way and we have seen a rise in the amount of tribute spaces being created this year. We have more than double the amount of donations received in 2024 and have over 40% more spaces created.

As a hospital charity, we receive lots of support from families of loved ones who have been cared for at one of our hospitals. Campaigns like this really help us to highlight how important and beneficial it can be for people grieving to be able to say thank you and give back to a cause so close to them.

About Barts Charity

  • Barts Charity is dedicated to supporting improvements to healthcare and transformative research with a primary focus on the issues that matter to the people of East London. It does this by funding high-quality research, innovative patient care projects and NHS staff wellbeing initiatives that would otherwise not be funded by the NHS or other funders.
  • It focuses its funding on supporting Barts Health NHS Trust, which runs St Bartholomew’s, The Royal London, Mile End, Whipps Cross and Newham Hospitals, and the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London, where there are six medical research institutes. We also support researchers at the School of Health Sciences at City, University of London.
