The Band from the Barracks are a pop-up band formed out of weekly Hear Me Out workshops at Napier Barracks in Kent.
Napier Barracks is home to refugees and asylum seekers waiting for their status. Our weekly workshops, run by our artist Ollie, provide an opportunity for people to get creative, socialise, have fun and make music.
For the second year in a row The Sanctuary Festival in Hastings booked the Band from the Barracks to perform on Refugee Day 2024. The weeks and months in the lead up to the performance included rehearsals every week learning the songs but it also featured an ever-changing line-up of musicians - the nature of the UK immigration system means that people can be moved on at any point, it is an environment filled with uncertainties. Hear Me Out works hard to bring some joy, connection and community into these places through our regular music workshops.
Hear Me Out runs music-making workshops in immigration detention centres and asylum hotels to release the words, music and life stories of people held inside.
