Meet Ujamaa Community Resource Team (UCRT) – winner of the 2024 Ashden Award for Natural Climate Solutions.
Local NGO UCRT have worked with more than 120 Indigenous communities in Tanzania. Many of these communities are semi-nomadic, their way of life is under threat by a combination of climate change and encroachment on their lands by investors and large scale farms. UCRT have secured land rights to over 1.7 million hectares of land for these communities. They have also helped them to manage and create a sustainable living from the land in the face of the increasingly devastating effects of climate change.
The annual Ashden Awards celebrate and promote outstanding, inclusive climate innovation from across the world.
Ashden’s mission is to accelerate transformative climate solutions and build a more just world.
We boost climate innovators in the UK and Global South: organisations that are bringing clean energy to villages and refugee camps, fixing up cold and draughty homes, and tackling other urgent climate challenges. Challenges like making schools more sustainable, and helping communities protect and restore the nature around them.
We also drive wider change by promoting and showcasing these solutions to policymakers, funders, and other influential audiences.
We align with the following UN Sustainable Development Goals:
