All about Learn to Love to Read

Learn to Love to Read

Learn to Love to Read is a Wandsworth-based children's literacy charity. We help children develop the skills they need to become confident and enthusiastic readers. Our work targets disadvantaged children across Wandsworth who are struggling to develop core literacy skills. We work with children aged 0 to 11 years and their parents. We aim to break the cycle of illiteracy and poverty and transform children's lives by intervening at the earliest stages.

Our work has three main strands which all connect to support our aim of making ‘every child a reader’.

  1. * Our classes for disadvantaged 0 to 4 year olds and their parents, focusing on songs, stories and speaking and listening games, prepare children to be ready to read when they start primary school.
  2. * Our weekly one-to-one support from trained volunteers, for primary-age children not yet meeting expected levels, builds reading skills, confidence and enthusiasm.
  3. * Our parent workshops and events build parental confidence and knowledge and equip them to support their child’s reading development at home.

We work with ten partner schools across Wandsworth: two in Battersea, three in Tooting and five in Roehampton - these are the three cluster hub areas in the borough. We also partner with children’s centres, nurseries, the local authority, community groups, a refugee charity and our local Home-Start charity to deliver our work.
