Ming-Ai Association
Life in the Time of Corona

Film & Campaign Description

The documentary Life in the Time of Corona is an oral history project, funded by the Culture Recovery Fund and the National Heritage Lottery Fund, to record what had happened to the Chinese communities and their personal experiences during the peak of the coronavirus pandemic.

The project interviewed 50 interviewees and the production was supported by 12 volunteer interviewers. The interviewees are from different regions with various backgrounds such as NHS doctors and nurses, other key workers (postal driver, supermarket worker, teachers, COVID labs, etc.), COVID patients, LGBTQ+, workers from catering and tourism industries, researchers, students, community workers, journalist, shop owners, househusband, etc.

Lockdowns and social distancing rules applied during the project lifespan, therefore both the volunteers and interviewees were supporting the production remotely and digitally.

The full oral history collection is deposited at the National Life Stories, British Library.

Ming-Ai Association

Ming-Ai established in 1993 as an educational charity aiming to promote and preserve the British Chinese culture heritage.  We run a Master Degree programme in "Chinese Cultural Heritage Management" (validated by Middlesex University), and carry out different culture courses and projects.

A digital platform "British Chinese Heritage Centre" is developed in 2013 (supported by the National Heritage Lottery Fund) to collect and collate the stories of the British Chinese with the method of oral history.  We also run an outreach project, Healthy Chinese Cuisine Ambassador, to schools in England to promote the healthy cooking and Chinese culinary art.
