The Listening Place

The Listening Place is a volunteer-led charity based in London aiming to transform how we support people who feel suicidal.  Our trained volunteers are part of a team delivering free face-to-face, confidential, ongoing support to thousands of people each year.  They help create the warm and welcoming environment that encourages people struggling with suicidal thoughts and feelings to talk openly without being judged or given advice.

Our volunteers are an amazing group of compassionate reliable people who give their time to offer non-judgemental empathetic support to our visitors - they have a fundamental desire to help others.  The volunteers in our video talk with passion and enthusiasm about their experience of volunteering at The Listening Place - the demand for our service continues to grow, with over 17,000 visitor referrals since we opened in 2016, so we are always recruiting more volunteers to join us.

We know this support works.  Feedback from people who have used our service has been overwhelmingly positive; we have robust evaluation methods that demonstrate that our service can make a real difference to the lives of many people who are feeling suicidal, helping to reduce suicidal feelings and increase feelings of support after an average of four months.

Our visitors say it best:

"Incredibly professional, supportive, compassionate and non-judgemental.  I can't stress enough how grateful I am to all the visitors I have spoken with"

"TLP has been a huge help to me and has helped me overcome depression and suicidal thoughts"
