75% of all suicides in the UK are men. Most suicide researchers have not looked at males specifically, and their lives. They have only looked at class and poverty issues, depravation and generally at mental health. Society is very judgemental of men and there is a definite empathy gap.
HIS believe suicides are a tragic loss of life and many suicides in men are preventable. They want to create a model that enables communities to encourage men to talk freely about their concerns, reduce isolation and de-stigmatise mental health problems.
HIS offers a 24/7 helpline, Counsellors, Buddies & Key Workers, Holistic Therapy, Events and Workshops.
They match up hobbies and interests so men can relate to their volunteer buddy, who in most cases have been through similar experiences themselves. There are no time scales or budget in recovery, all counsellors know they will help until they feel empowered enough to deal with their mental health.
