Canal & River Trust

Our vision is to have living waterways that transform places and enrich lives.

We’re the charity working to protect and bring to life a 250-year-old network of canals and rivers. Spanning 2,000 miles, touching the lives of millions. People who visit our waterways are happier and healthier. Nature is recovering. History is alive.

Our work involves not only looking after our waterways, particularly in the face of climate change, but promoting them widely to the nine million people who have waterways on their doorstep so that many more people benefit from our free, accessible, and local source of wellbeing. Working with volunteers and communities across England and Wales we transform canals and rivers into spaces where local people want to spend time and feel better. No other charity brings so much free, open, and accessible blue and green space to the doorstep of so many.

This is why we have created Our Story film, a love letter to the canals and rivers we care for, capturing the amazing diverse wealth of opportunity they can offer to everyone, with your support.
