Action Tutoring

Action Tutoring is a charity that supports disadvantaged young people to achieve academically, with a view to enabling them to progress in education, employment or training. We do this by partnering high-quality volunteer tutors with pupils to increase their subject knowledge, confidence and study skills.

Education in this country isn't fair. Pre-pandemic, disadvantaged pupils were, on average, 18 months behind their non-disadvantaged peers by the end of secondary school. However, since the pandemic and subsequent school closures, it's been estimated that pupils living in ‘persistent poverty’ are now over 22 months behind their peers on average. We know these pupils can achieve, but often lack access to the tools and resources that help them succeed. Our support is needed more than ever.

Our vision is a world in which no child’s life chances are limited by their socio-economic background. We provide tailored maths and English tuition to pupils from low-income backgrounds in Years 5, 6, 7, 10 and 11, ensuring our support reaches those who need it most. Our trained volunteers support pupils through weekly one hour sessions, taking place online or in our partner schools. Tutors carefully guide pupils through our resources, helping to build knowledge, confidence and growth mindset.

Our impact work helps to close the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their more affluent peers. Our programmes build pupils' understanding of maths and English and help bridge gaps in their knowledge, which are bigger than ever due to the pandemic. This sets pupils on a strong trajectory for achieving in school and increases their chance of success in key exams. Our volunteers help pupils to cultivate a growth mindset by working to increase their confidence and resilience within sessions.
